City Bike Bus, Free Compost Days return to help you spring into Earth Month community events

(April 3, 2026) The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is excited to announce the return of the City Bike Bus on Wednesday, April 22! What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a community bike ride to downtown? That’s not all—we have a packed schedule of Earth Day this April. We also have opportunities to participate in community bike rides, Sunday Parkways events, bike maintenance workshops, and more! And they’re all FREE!
Join us for the first City Bike Bus of 2026
Do you commute to work downtown? Want a chance to try out bike commuting with other Portlanders? Join the City Bike Bus Earth Day ride on Wednesday, April 22. A bike bus is a group of students—but in this case, adults—biking to school—but in this case, work—together.
This year, there are eight unique bike bus routes from across Portland, so you can choose the one closest to your home. Start at the beginning of the route or join anywhere along the route. All rides will have dedicated ride leaders who will take you on a comfortable ride to the city’s glistening downtown waterfront. Start times vary, check the event page for up-to-date locations and ride times. All rides end at the Salmon Springs Fountain (SW Salmon Street and Naito Parkway) at 8:15 a.m. for a celebration with coffee, goodies, e-bike demos, and a chance to talk with the PBOT’s bike bus organizers about how you can start a bike bus at your workplace.
Join on April 22 and every fourth Wednesday of the month, through September! Bike buses are scheduled on April 22, May 27, June 24, July 22, Aug. 26, and September 23.

April 10: El Camino De Dolores – Dolores Huerta Walk+Roll to School Day
Student and teachers, celebrate Dolores Huerta’s dedication to social justice by walking, biking, or rolling to school on Friday, April 10. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the farmworkers’ movement, Dolores’s fight for equality, and how these struggles connect to current efforts for positive change. April 11: Earth in Motion – Earth Day 2026
How we move shapes our planet. Explore cleaner, more proactive ways to move through and live in Portland—from biking and TriMet to clean energy and the food we eat—at the City of Portland’s Earth Day event, Earth in Motion. Join the City of Portland’s Sustainability Office, city bureaus, and community partners at Parkrose Middle School from 12 – 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 11.

April 18 and 19: Free Compost Days are back!
PBOT is back with the annual Free Compost Days event Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19! Stop by the Sunderland Yard Recycling Facility (9325 NE Sunderland Avenue), between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. to load up on free compost. We don’t anticipate running out this year, so there’s no need to rush there first thing on Saturday morning. Want to skip the lines? Compost is now available to purchase for $24/cubic yard.
