On This Date…326 Years Ago!

Today is the 326th anniversary of the last Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake. (We know the date thanks to Japanese tsunami records.) A reminder to bolt your house to its foundation and have emergency supplies on hand.

According to research (documented in this NY Time’s article), a magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck the Pacific Northwest on January 26, 1700. We don’t know when the next “big one” will happen, but education and preparedness is important.

Learn more now about how you can be prepared if disaster does strike. The City’s Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) does much of the planning for such disasters and emergency situations, and their website has a variety of information, resources, and tools. Specifically, learn where you can go for emergency support when communications systems are down—these Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Nodes (BEECN) are highlighted on the PBEM website. Additionally, if you’d like to be equipped to support your neighbors in the event of an emergency, PBEM provides trainings to become a Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) volunteer.

Knowledge isn’t just power, it’s safety.
